Where the "B" is.....
Flying on Virgin America-- California’s quirky carrier—from Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale to overnight at the B Ocean, Florida’s quirkiest, but chic, hotel, proved quite the trip.
It began with some serious in-flight turbulence with your LA Travel stuck, bouncing around in the bathroom. The Virgin pilot did warn us, but when you’ve got to go you go. The rest of the flight (and trip) moved along smoothly.
Virgin America offers most non-stop flights and best fares to Fort Lauderdale from Los Angeles. The airline also gives passengers top notch inflight service and amenities. Similarly the B Ocean is not only one of the best values in South Florida for room rates, food and beverages, it’s the most delightfully idiosyncratic hotels around. Consider it, if you will, for a fun spring break or break from reality.

The hotel is ideal for people from Los Angeles who fly to Fort Lauderdale to board a cruise. The three hour time change makes it impossible to arrive on time for the usual 5 PM departure unless you book a red eye. That’s the reason your savvy Travel Diva/cruise expert stayed at the B Ocean—to “B” on time for embarkation on the Seabourn Sojourn. We are now on board the spiffy ship heading to Monte Carlo (which you will read more about and on my National Cruise Examiner site: http://http://www.examiner.com/cruise-88-in-national/patti-pietschmann).  But for now let’s stick with the “B”.
The year old property plays off the name every way possible from the b’stro on the beach (sic), to promos such as “B Our Guest”, “B where you want to B”, “B active”, and a lot of other “bs” which are printed and placed in your room. There’s an amazing over-sized iPad-like device in the lobby that links you up with every tourist option from restaurants to attractions.
Even the spa is unusual. It’s actually a suite on the second floor where guests go for massages that are pure b-liss especially when performed by Maria or Katia. The tiny fitness room would not pass muster with active Angelenos, but then the ocean and a long stretch of beach awaits joggers and swimmers just across the street. There is also a small pool on property.  Other amenities include free WiFi and local calls, $5 snacks in your room, a plush sea turtle on every bed, and free (really good) morning coffee.
The highlight of the hotel is the food served in two restaurants: SAIA, which features Nobu quality Asian tapas and the b’stro with its own take on French fare. Stay tuned for more about both in “Diva discoveries” that is coming soon to this page. B Hotel manager Joel Darr is particularly proud of the cuisine. “Open Table calls SAIA the best Asian restaurant in South Florida,” Joel boasted. “But, the b’stro’s always a favorite with guests, locals and my wife, “he added.
Joel describes his hotel’s style as whimsical, sensitive, fun, humane and adult-friendly. “We’re not meant for kids and we don’t accept pets,” he explained.There are so many unique touches that define this hotel that you just have to B there.
