How wonderful would it feel to stretch your legs and let your imagination wander freely along the shore or set out on the water and leave your cares behind? Take a deep breath and picture yourself swimming and splashing under a friendly sun or paddling a kayak through the sparkling waters of the Gulf.

Kayaks and snorkeling gear can be rented at Bahia Honda State Park. There are also boat tours that allow visitors and snorkelers to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Looe Key Marine Sanctuary, where snorkelers may see parrotfish and barracuda as well as the butterfly fish and angelfish who dart along the crest of the reef.

You can enjoy some of the best nearshore snorkeling in The Florida Keys in the shallow waters along the shore at Bahia Honda State Park. Bahia Honda is also a haven for rare and endangered species, such as the white-crowned pigeon and the elusive Miami blue butterfly.

• Insider’s Tip: Bahia Honda State Park has a one-of a-kind hiking trail that leads to the top of the Old Bahia Honda Bridge, which was built between 1905 and 1912 as part of Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad. The bridge is no longer in use by either trains or cars, so you can wander along the historic structure and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the water below, where you might see large rays or fish jumping. If you visit on a day when the water is calm, you may even see fish and sea turtles swimming beneath the surface.
